Golf is a game with many rules. Many avid golfers still don’t know the rules very well. I have been playing my whole life and still have a lot of rules I am not certain with. Not only that, but golf also comes with a serious understanding of etiquette. You don’t need to just know the rules, but also be well mannered while playing.
Golf has very strict etiquette. One of the most important parts of this is to be quiet while others are hitting. Golfers already have way too many things going through their mind, making it hard to focus. When it goes from dead quiet to an abrupt noise happening while you are over the ball, it can really shift your focus. It is very important to be mindful of when people in your group are hitting.
Another part of etiquette is to watch where you are standing. You never want to stand in the way of where someone is hitting. You also don’t want to stand too close to someone who is hitting, even if you are just out of reach from a player swinging. This not only can distract a golfer, but a slight movement can also get you hit when someone is swinging. When putting, you also should make sure you don’t walk in someone’s line to the hole.
A final piece worth mentioning is that you are supposed to always shake hands with your playing partners at the end of the round. I always make sure to take my hat off as well, although this is becoming less common in today’s golf world. The influx of golfers from COVID has grown the golfer population, which is great. We just need to make sure that these new golfers learn proper etiquette to keep the game trending in the right direction.
Overall, etiquette may seem boring. But I promise you, playing with potential clients or business partners will be impressed by you if you have great etiquette. It really goes a long way, and can make your character seem very respectable.
