Golf has been in my life for as long as I can remember. My dad played professionally, and my grandpa worked at the local golf course I grew up playing. With the help of both of them, it taught me the fundamentals of golf at a very young age.
I believe that starting golf at a young age helped me significantly. I have turned into a collegiate golfer now, and a lot of that has to do with starting young. Because I started so young, I was learning the golf swing as I was learning basic motor skills. Nowadays, because I have a swing so engraved into my mind, it makes learning other parts of the game so much easier.
When I was in high school, I played more than just golf. I played varsity football, and that’s where all my friends came from. Virtually none of my football friends had ever played golf. Once I made the decision to focus on golf, they seemed to all be shocked. Nowadays, all my friends have gotten into golf. I see all of their beginner struggles, and I don’t know what to help them with at times. All of them tell me similar things, “I wish I started playing as a kid”.
Overall, if you are a parent looking to get your kid into golf, you should do it. I would not recommend forcing them to play as it could drive them away. I would recommend doing everything you can to make it fun for them. If they enjoy it, you will have yourself a kid who will be beating you by the time they’re in highschool!
