Golf has a way of stripping everything down. There are no people to rely on and no distractions to hide behind. It’s just you and your thoughts. That’s why it reveals your personality so clearly. There are plenty of examples on the PGA Tour every week that show this so clearly.
Adversity is the first test. Everyone hits bad shots and faces tough stretches, but your reaction says everything. Do you get frustrated and let it affect the next hole? Or do you stay composed and move forward? Golf rewards emotional control, and it’s something that professional golfers do incredibly well for the most part.
Patience is another trait that shows up quickly. In college golf, I see a lot of impatient golfers. These players (I, myself, am guilty at times) often try to force birdies or aggressive shots. The game is slow, unpredictable, and often unfair. Your ability to stay steady or unsteady can become obvious.
It is also important to realize how you are treating other people. Golf is built on respect. The way you interact with your playing partners, especially when things aren’t going your way, reveals a lot about your character.
Golf is a game that you cannot control. Bad breaks happen, and perfect shots don’t always get rewarded. The way you handle that reality is extremely important. You can either accept it or fight it. This ultimately shows you who you really are.
